7 Random Things About Me (and My TV)    Print Print

modernmami tagged me and it’s been awhile since I’ve done this meme so why not, right? Except this is a TV blog so we’re gonna do this TV-style! (Since that kinda cheats modernmami out of her facts about me, I posted some of those over at my raelee blog.)

For the record, I just made that sound a whole lot more fun than it’s actually going to be. Fair warning.

  1. For a girl who’s a self-proclaimed TV whore, you’d never know it from my actual TV. I have a heavy-ass, not-so-new, 27-inch Philips from Wal-Fart that’s got some upper left-hand corner cathode ray tube issues. Worst part? It’s a conscious choice. Until my recent visit with Just Jody in Canada, I’ve never even been tempted to get a new HD-TV. Sure, I love how HD shows look on them but I watch a heck of a lot of things that are not shot in HD and I’m not so fond of how those look. Also, I had a surround sound system but I gave it to my parents because I got annoyed with how loud it can be. I think there might a 90 year-old trapped in my body.
  2. I have two DVRs just to keep up with all of my various shows and, at times last Fall, even that didn’t give me the recording flexibility I needed.
  3. Even in this DVR Age, I prefer to watch shows as they air and I actually like commercials. Not watching them so much, though I do like a good commercial every now and then, as having a quick little break to take in the story so far or run to the bathroom or kill my cat. You know, the things you can’t do when you’re concentrating on your show. And, unless I’m tight on time, I tend to let the commercials run when I’m watching a DVR-ed show.
  4. I can not stand watching people get embarrassed. If I had to pick one thing I’d like to talk to a shrink about, this would be it. When I’m watching a TV show (or movie or, for that matter, reading a book) and a character is about to get embarrassed, I have to either mute it or fast-forward through the scene. If it’s a character I really love, I often fast-forward it and only go back and watch once I know that they “made” it through it (and even then I keep my finger on the mute button just in case). It’s like I’m physically incapable of sitting through something like that. It’s why it took me so long to like The Office and, to this day, I don’t find a lot of the humor on the show as funny as others do because of it.
  5. I can not not watch the end of something. It doesn’t matter how bad I think it is or how much I’m not liking it, if I start watching it, I need to know how it ends. In fact, if I have to walk away from something, I’ll often go online just to read about that one episode (of shows I never watch even!) just so I can get it out of my head. I think this will probably give you a clue as to how I became a TV whore. I generally feel the same way about a story arc and that’s why it’s easier for me to walk away from a show that relies heavily on a week to week formula with no underlying, ongoing plot.
  6. I am obsessed with checking out the weather every ten minutes. And, really, because Orlando has a 24 hour news station that has local weather on the 1s and the Weather Channel does local weather on the 8s, I can actually check it twice every ten minutes. I don’t do that, though. DirecTV broke me of the habit since, if you have satellite, the Weather Channel only gives you the weather for your region so I stopped caring about those ‘on the 8s’ reports.
  7. I don’t like watching TV online. I will. If I missed an episode or I need to fact check something for a blog post and don’t have it saved on my DVR, I will watch an entire episode online. But, in general, I prefer to watch my shows on my TV. I’m not convinced this will change. I can see myself downloading a show via a DVR or similar machine hooked up to the Internet but I don’t ever see myself liking the idea of combining my TV and my computer. Certainly not to do the same things I do with them now. This, by the way, is not the same thing as saying I don’t like to be able to interact with a TV show’s Universe online. That I love to do. I just wonder if I’d ever be able to fall in love with an online show since I don’t have the patience to give them as much attention as I do TV shows. Only time will tell, eh?

I think I’m supposed to tag 7 more people but it was hard enough coming up with 7 facts. So, if you want to play, tag yourself and we’ll pretend I did it.

  1. [...] tagged me for this meme and I did it over at Ramblings but felt like that was cheating a bit since narrowing it down to just TV facts kinda defeats the [...]

  2. My husband does the same thing (referring to #4) - I think it’s pretty funny.

  3. Yeah I imagine watching that reaction from someone probably would be. I sometimes freak out because I’m not near the remote and might just have to watch an uncomfortable scene… my friends find that pretty funny too. Damn them.

  4. My TV wants you to come back and spend some more time with it… we miss you. I have Serenity in HD now, how can you resist??

I’m the same way with TV on the computer. I’ll watch it if I have to to get caught up on something, but I really don’t like it. Too hard to see/hear.

I’ve been working very hard on letting go of things that aren’t good. Because I’ve always had a really hard time not seeing a book/show/movie through to the end once I’ve started it as well. I think Rent was a turning point for me… it was the first movie that was so bad I just shut it off, and since then I’ve been getting a bit better at it. This is time I could be using to enjoy something GOOD!

  5. Oh my god, I thought I was the only one who couldn’t stand watching people be embarrassed. You know how everyone loves the first couple of episodes of American Idol? Even if they don’t watch the show? I can’t bear to watch. I just cringe and feel so embarrassed on behalf of the person being embarrassed, even when they’re fictional. There’s a KFC commercial out now that I cannot stand for this–you know, the one where the kid refers to his friend’s mom by her first name and they all laugh at him? I run to mute the TV every time that comes on.

  6. 2 DVRs??? That’s awesome! If you ever missed an episode, they have a ton of free shows on Fancast.com that you can watch without downloading:

  7. Omigod–were we separated at birth? My TV is almost old enough to vote, I don’t have cable, I also squirm when people are in embarrassing situations! Sometime I have to change the channel. Even if it’s a scripted “embarrassing moment” I can’t take it. I’m not a big fan of commercials (unless they’re really clever like the Mac vs. PC ones), but sometimes when I’m watching a show that I’ve taped, I’ll get so caught up that I forget I can fast forward.

  8. Number 4, yes! Ditto. Oh god I have to hide behind cushions and put fingers in my ears. I can’t stand it. Even if it’s an episode I’ve seen loads of times and I know what’s coming and how it ends, can’t do it.
