Casting Jason Dohring    Print Print

Jason Dohring as a putting Josef on MOONLIGHT.This interview with Jason Dohring is one of my favorites and it’s all because of the part where Whitney is asking Jason about golfing and he says, “My dad taught me how to play, and I stuck with it, unfortunately.” That’s exactly how I feel about the game.

This weekend Jason is playing in the BMW Charity Pro-Am and, if you’re one of those who likes to see Jason in everything that he does, you can suffer through three hours of the tournament this afternoon from 1-4PM on the Golf Channel. Seeing a picture of him on the course from yesterday reminded me of the scene in Moonlight when Josef is using a putting green (pictured on right) and how you can totally tell Jason is a golfer in that shot. Which naturally led me to thinking about Jay and what role I’d like to see him in now that Moonlight is a goner. Here are the few the shows I’d like to see cast Jason:

  • Brothers & Sisters - Ok, look, I’ve wanted to see Jason sharing the screen with Sally Field ever since he talked about how he loves her and has the biggest crush on her. So, I’d love to see him on this show in some fashion and interacting with Nora. And, you know, they do have a male role about Jason’s age that needs filling…
  • Surviving the Filthy Rich - This is a new show on The CW and I’m not even sure I’m going to love it yet but I do like the script and premise. They’ve yet to cast the character of Will who is the wealthy and extremely hot dilettante who lives on the estate next door. In the script, when we first meet Will he’s described as “SLICKSTER” and, yes, I know I may be typecasting here but I immediately pictured Jason in the role.
  • Dollhouse - One thing I love about Joss is how he always seems to know his actors strengths and writes to them. I’d love to see what would come of these two working together and I think Joss respected what Jason did with Logan that he’d enjoy working with him. Plus, who doesn’t love the idea of Jason as a doll?

But enough of my dream castings for Jason. What about yours? Is there a show you’d like to see Jason on? If you were his agent, where would you be trying to get him auditions?

Oh, and hey, Jason’s official site has said he was going to update it for as long as I can remember but now he’s added a survey you can take and I figure, if enough of us fill it out, it’ll encourage him to finally get on with the re-design/updating.

  1. I’d love to see Jason on Cupid, Fringe, Dollhouse, Dexter, Chuck or Heroes. Right now, Supernatural is the only show I watch on the CW and I’d prefer to keep it that way.

  2. Haha, Anita. Sorry… I know, I know. No one is more surprised than me that there’s another show on The CW I’m looking forward to! Is there a role in particular on Dexter that you’d like to see Jason in or is it just that it’s a show you enjoy and adding him would just increase that?

A lot of people have suggested Heroes… him as villain even. That could be fun and, hey, could even mean a little VM reunion. I’d love to see the way Jason and Kristen play off each other when she’s also a badie.

  3. I haven’t had enough look at the pilots for this season, but I know plenty of people are interested in Dollhouse and Fringe. Either would be good, as I know that each of those showrunners understands the way in which actors work.

Of course, I could easily think of more later.

  4. I can’t really see Jason in Fringe. I mean, I could, but it seems like he’d end up with just a guest star/recurring role there. (Though any Dollhouse role would probably be recurring too.) But would Jason relocate to Toronto for a recurring role?

  5. Uh, I’m an idiot. I guess he wouldn’t have to relocate, especially for that kind of role. So ignore me!

  6. The Dexter recommendation was just because it’s one of my favorite’s and has great writing and acting, which means Jason would fit right it. I could see Jason in a detective role, although not as a uniform cop and while I think he would make a great serial killer, unless we’re talking about a role like ITK, it would be too brief…

  7. Putting Dohring in Dollhouse? Could my heart take the excitement?? Would it explode from sheer joy?

  8. [...] Thanks to CBS, Moonlight’s dead. But what will we do without our weekly Jason Dohring fix? Come share your ideas on where he should be cast next. (RTVW) [...]

  9. I would adore Jason on Dollhouse. Ack - now you have me longing for Jason on Dollhouse. Joss and Jason, what a combination. Almost a Marsters type of wonderment for me. Sigh. Anyone have Joss’ home phone number?

I would also love to see him in Fringe or really anything anyone is mentioning.

  10. Dollhouse is exactly what I envisioned for Jason. Whedon would know exactly how to use him to his fullest potential. I’d love to see Jason put on the full snark in a scene with Tamoh.

Ok - now this is all I can think about. Somebody call Joss!

  11. Rae–my Fringe comment came mostly from the stuff I’ve heard from others. I’m not one to really give pilots much credit until I see them later.

  13. So in on the Brothers & Sisters gig. PERFECT. I also vote for Pushing Daisies. Jason’s got just enough humor and depth and quirk to fit in there. Not sure about the character, except that he would be a little but off and very smiley. Some sort of inventor probably. Maybe a wacky pharmacist. Anything really.

And since Jason is so serious about acting, I would love to see him try a sitcom. Just to challenge him to lighten it up. You can tell he enjoyed the comedy between Josef/Mick so much. HIMYM would be a good fit for him since those guys are all great actors. Maybe a co-worker of Barney’s? Or a relative?

    (This is fun.)

  14. Correction from above: “little but off” should be “little bit off.”

Also, when I said HIMYM, I forgot that Jason had worked with Alyson Hannigan before. Trina/Logan reunion!

  15. I like the idea of Jason on Pushing Daisies! How fun. And, in a way, that would let him loosen up and do the comedy bit too since they really ride the line between the two.

I’m not sure I can see Jason on HIMYM but it certainly would be a good challenge for him.
