It’s time I come clean. I like shows about girls that kick ass. Shocking, I know. I can hardly believe it myself. These dirty little secrets just keep coming out… HA.
Seriously, though, I was predisposed to like ABC Family’s new mini-series Samurai Girl as soon as I saw those posters of Jamie Chung brandishing a sword. I’ve had my hands on the first two hours of the series for well over a month now but I kept putting off watching it. Why? Because I didn’t want to have to wait too long to see the rest of it. That’s how sure I was that I was going to love it.
I wasn’t wrong. Once I put in the disc, I couldn’t stop watching and I made a face at the TV when it faded to black and I realized I had two more weeks before I’d get to the rest of the series. So I spent the time drawing hearts around the poster to express my adoration.
Shut up. Sometimes the 11 year old girl deep down inside of me comes bursting out and there’s no stopping her.
This six part mini-series event, airing every night this weekend from 8-10 PM on ABC Family, stars Jamie Chung as Heaven, a one time orphan who is now much beloved by her adoptive father and brother. We follow Heaven as she reluctantly leaves Tokyo for San Francisco to attend her arranged marriage. A marriage intended to bring two feuding families together at last. That is, until a group of ninjas interrupt the ceremony and send Heaven’s life into chaos. Warned to be careful whom she trusts, she sets out to find the answers about her adopted family, her past, and who would want to sabotage her wedding. She’s helped by her brother’s friend Jake (Brendan Fehr) and two new friends while searching for him, Otto and Cheryl.
As the daughter of an important figure in Japan, Heaven’s been isolated much of her life and lives for the simple joys in life… like sneaking a donut or two. So when she gets to San Francisco and ends up in the city on her own, she’s suffering from a bit of culture shock. That leads to some great scenes with her new friends Otto and Cheryl. I love the way the three of the play off each other. By the end of the second hour, they’ve also met Jake and the dynamic between these four is terrific. Maybe I have a weak spot for ragtag groups of people who can just tell are going to eventually be great friends. Of course, I also hate her because she’s definitely got chemistry with co-star Brendan Fehr who is so much hotter here than he ever was on Roswell. I suppose it helps that he’s a bad-ass and we get the idea that he hasn’t always traveled the straight and narrow path in life. You know me and my weaknesses for bad boys with a heart of gold. Especially if they end up training my girl who can kick ass. It’s a thing with me. Like I said, the two sidekicks are pretty darn amusing as well. They’re the toke “normal” people in the story and it’s fun to see their reactions as they learn more and more about Heaven and Jake. But as we all know, every girl with a destiny needs good friends at her side and I think they fit the bill perfectly. The story itself isn’t anything mind-blowing. It’s pretty much your standard girl with a destiny fare. This doesn’t bother me like it might bother others. After all, we’re talking about (me) a girl who mainlines romance and mystery novels like their about to disappear off the face of the Earth forever. As long as I’ve got an interesting group of characters and, in the case of TV, a cast that feels like they belong together, I’m ok with formulaic storylines. Honestly, I want you all to watch because I hear good ratings could lead to a regular spot on the ABC Family’s roster. And I wouldn’t hesitate to add Samurai Girl to my TV schedule. So give it a shot. Surely you could use a little swordplay in your life, eh? Especially if the ones wielding those swords look like this:
I’m enjoying Jamie Chung as Heaven. She seems frail but, when she starts kicking ass, you believe it’s possible. And, even though she’s a bit naive, she’s no pushover either. She’s got just enough toughness that you can buy into her being Samurai Girl. I talked to Jamie for a bit at the ABC Family cocktail party during Comic Con and her excitement about the show is infectious. Who can blame her? Wouldn’t any girl love to this kind of role?

Another one we don’t get to watch up here. Bummer, looks like fun.
And Awww. I love that pic! *hugs the bloggers*
Ok, so I totally checked this out, partly because of your rec, but mainly because of HOT Brendan Fehr. Yum. I wasn’t expecting to like it that much (and honestly had no time for another show), but I was hooked pretty quickly! Love it! I can’t wait for tonight’s conclusion. Who woulda thunk?!
