Do you realize how frustrating it is that you can find a directory of just about everything online from blogs to podcasts to books. Except web series. The very video content that is made for the web is harder to find on it than a traditional TV show. Since I’m starting to researching a little project, it’s extremely annoying not being able to easily compile a decent cross section of the different types of web series available.
Not that online directories are the best judge of things either but I do find them to be good starting points. And unlike blogs or podcasts, web series aren’t as likely to link to similar web series so I can’t even attack the problem with my typical “follow the bread crumbs” meandering. Which is why I’m asking you to tell me what web series you watch online.
I’m looking for everything from webisodes of actual television shows to completely original produced for online only series. I also want both series that are done by people in the entertainment industry to series that are shot by Joe Schmoe and ten of his friends. Anything and everything. Even if you gave a series a try and didn’t like it, I still want to hear about it. I’m trying to get a good mix of series so I’ll take the good with the bad.
I promise to fill you in on the project once I have it a little more organized. Right now it’s just an idea that’s begun to grow so I don’t want to talk about it too much before I figure out the scope, etc.
So please, if you’ve ever watched a series online, point me that direction in the comments below. Thanks!
And, to add a little fun to this post, here’s the latest Chuck/Buy More webisode starring Lester, Jeff, and Anna…

Dexter, Gossip Girl, Entourage, Little Britain USA… basically everything that’s on pay cable (since I’m poor and can’t afford such luxuries) and some little shows here and there.

Thanks, Tim G. However, more specifically, I’m looking for anything made for the web VS TV shows that are available online. So, like I listed above, the Mode After Hours is something associated with UB but made only for the web.

The Guild, Mr Deity (http://www.mrdeity.com/) and You Suck at Photoshop (http://www.mydamnchannel.com/Big_Fat_Brain/You_Suck_at_Photoshop/YouSuckatPhotoshop4_401.aspx) are the best originals I’ve seen.
Easy to Assemble (http://www.easytoassemble.tv/),Web Therapy (http://lstudio.lexus.com/#vid1204) and Tights and Fights (http://www.tightsandfights.com/) are all worth a look. Back on Topp (http://backontopps.com/) is also pretty funny.
Check Tubefilter’s web schedule guide for daily links to series (http://www.tubefilter.tv/schedule/).

Thanks, Jill! And, see, besides The Guild, I haven’t seen any of those. Wait, I take that back. I think I’ve seen at least one episode of You Suck at Photoshop.

The Guild (of course)
Pink, http://www.pinktheseries.com/
quarterlife, http://www.quarterlife.com/
Dr. Horrible, (this is more of a mini-web series)
Girltrash, http://www.ourchart.com/girltrash (this one has been “on hiatus” for over a year)
High Drama, http://www.thewb.com/shows/high-drama/ (This reminds me of my own behind-the-scenes high school musical drama)

Oops… forgot about Legend of Neil – http://www.legendofneil.com
9. Comment by Rae on 20 October 2008:
Thanks, filmtx. I knew about quarterlife and High Drama (and Dr. H and TG of course) but hadn’t heard of Pink or Girltrash.
I forgot about LoN too. Probably because it wasn’t my cup of tea.
10. Comment by filmtx on 20 October 2008:
I don’t watch LoN religiously like I did quarterlife, but it has its moments. Specifically, Felicia Day as a pixie faery… a role she was born to play.
Pink is produced by a guy I know named Blake Calhoun, who is also producing another web series for TheWB.com (can’t remember which). He’s a really nice guy.
Girltrash is from D.E.B.S. & L Word director Angela Robinson about L.A.’s underground lesbian mafia. It’s fraking hilarious!
11. Comment by Just Jody on 21 October 2008:
The Guild & PG Porn are the only made for web series that I’ve watched, but I also watched the Heroes and the BSG webisodes which were both made for the web. (I don’t have links for you due the blocking here. Sorry.)
And of course Dr. Horrible!

Paddy’s Pub has TONS of online content for “Always Sunny”!

Ahh, yes Sonny, sorry! See prime example of me forgetting something even though I read Paddy’s Pub regularly. What I really love about PatheticGirl is how it builds on something introduced in the show.

I’m not a big webisode person (regular TV takes up too much time), but I do watch the CHUCK and OFFICE webisodes.

Thnx, Kath!
And, adding to the list…

Wondering if I should add a new category to specify between scripted shows VS “reality” web series. Hrmmm.

If you want to watch and incredible webseries check out “Luke 11-17″. It’s a thriller that has GREAT production values, great writing, great acting, great directing, great…well you get the idea. My friend passed it on to me when 3 episodes were up and I was hooked. I just watched the 7th episode. If you haven’t watched it, I would say drop everything and check it out.

Surprisingly there is some great stuff out there, especially just within this year.
I love:
Meet Me in the Graveyard (especially for the acting!)

The Guild (great concept)

Looking forward to watching some of the stuff on Strike TV as well like:
Fusion
Dangerous Woman
26. Comment by Rae on 28 January 2009:
Thanks for the suggestions Julie! I do watch The Guild and I watched a bit of Meet Me in the Graveyard. It wasn’t really holding my interest but I’ll give it another go. I was watching a bunch of stuff at the time so I may have just been unable to focus.
